Short Description:

Conceptual clarification. Periodisations. Locations of origin and installation. Demographic, social and economic data. State policies and laws. Economic conjuncture and employment. Receiving societies and immigrant communities. Institutional organization. Stigmatization and xenophobia. Social position and changes in time. Gender and generations.Strategies and identities. Repatriation. Relations to Greece. The Greek diaspora in Europe, America and Australia. Divergent positions in scientific and public discourses.From migrants to diaspora.

Aims:

To understand:
a. the causes of emigration
b. variation in emigrants’ characteristics over time
c. the significance of both sending and receiving states’ policies
d. the role of time in the integration processes

Learning Outcomes:

To identify and explain the changes of emigration patterns over time
A deeper understanding of contemporary migration movements

Structure:

13 weekly three-hour sessions with input from tutor, projection of documentaries and discussion

Assessment:

Written examination.
Students who wish to obtain a deeper understanding of the course may prepare a written assignment (2000-5000 words) which will account for 50% of their final grade.
