Course description

The course addresses the special provisions included in the Code of Medical Ethics and the way in which they are applied in the doctor - patient relationship. In addition it examines the legal and ethical issues set by artificial insemination. The course focuses on:

a. Eligibility and prerequisites for acquiring medical assistance in human reproduction (special emphasis is placed on consent of all persons involved).
b. Post-mortem artificial insemination (special emphasis is placed on cryopreservation and post mortem sperm retrieval and storage of genetic material).
c. Surrogacy.
d. Anonymity of genetic material donors.
c. The impact of assisted reproductive technologies on kinship.
d. Rights of patients
e. The legal content of Codes of Medical Ethics

Objectives

The course aims to offer a comprehensive analysis of the codes of medical ethics which provide the basic toolkit for establishing the rights and obligations of doctors and patients.

Learning outcomes

Students should develop skills that will allow them to understand and analyse how the codes of medical ethics work in relation to the issues set by reproductive technologies. Special emphasis is placed on understanding the complex legal and moral issues stemming from artificial insemination
