Course Description

It is an introductory course that presents and comparatively analyses healthcare systems based on the criteria of effectiveness, efficiency and equity in the access and use of health care. Health care market is analytically presented compared to the free market principles as well as their macro and micro effects are discussed. Emphasis is given on the management and economic evaluation of health technology (HTA).

Objectives

The students are expected to be able to understand and critically analyse:
(a) Topics related to the social and economic dimension of health and health care.
(b) Economic analysis instruments and their application on the structure and management of the healthcare sector.
(c) Methods and techniques related to health decision making as well as health policy planning.
(d) The use health indicators regarding the measurement and assessment of macro and micro consequences on health and the delivery of health services.   

Learning Outcomes

Development of generic competences: understanding, critical analysis and comparison of basic concepts in the field of health economics and health technology assessment (HTA).
Knowledge and development of basic skills related to the methods used in HTA process and the creation of multiple health performance indicators.

Seven (7) three-hour lectures

Students’ assessment

Written examination.
