Educational Programs and Materials Ι – 5 ECTS

Course Description
The module consists of two parts:
a) Educational Programmes and Materials: Typologies and Policies. In the first part we present multiple typologies of educational programmes by relating the latter’s structural characteristics with the prevailing socio-epistemic conditions in each context. In addition, we present recent trends in the development of educational programmes and materials using the notions of regulative and instructional rules. b) Society, Economy & Education. In this part we present the mechanisms through which the social and economic conditions influence the form of various educational programmes and materials.
Objectives
The objectives of this course are to:
- Familiarize students with the structural parts of an educational program
- Identify the key socio-economic factors influencing the design and development of educational programs and their accompanying materials
- Present the basic principles of designing educational programs as these are stated in official policy documents of international organizations (EU, OECD).
Learning Outcomes
Students after having completed this course will be able to:
- Recognize the structural characteristics of various educational programmes and of the associated with them material
- Relate these characteristics with the dominant in each period socio-epistemic conditions and discourses about educational policy.
- Design comprehensive educational programs taking into account the special conditions occurring in various circumstances
- Design educational material aligned with the objectives and the form of corresponding programs
- Identify the most important social, ideological and economical factors influencing the development of an educational program and its accompanying material
- Understand contemporary trends in designing educational programs along with guidelines implied by key policy documents
Students’ assessment
Students’ assessment is achieved through a combination of written examinations (80% of the total score) along with small scale projects allocated to groups of students and presented during the semester (20%).
