Course Description

The module consists of the following parts:

a) Modern forms of education: Non formal and Informal Education.
In this part, we present the main pedagogical characteristics of programmes and activities falling within the realm of non formal and informal education. We discuss the relevant pedagogic characteristics while at the same time we examine the corresponding institutions and policies.
b) Evaluation of educational programmes and materials
In the second part we analyze the processes, the special methodologies as well as the prevailing in Europe policy trends as far as the issue of evaluating educational programmes and materials is concerned.

Objectives

The objectives of this course are to:

  • Enable students to recognize the special pedagogical requirements for designing and implement programmes falling in the non formal sector as well as for activities aiming at informal learning.
  • Develop a clear understanding about the policies promoting these modern forms of education as well as the broader social conditions that lead to them.
  • Reflect with regards to the ideological origins of the contemporary evaluation policies as well as the recent expansion of the non-formal sector.

Learning Outcomes

Students after having completed this course will be able to:

  • Design comprehensive educational programs and materials for the non formal sector as well as activities aiming at informal learning
  • Devise and implement plans for evaluating educational programs, activities and materials of non formal sector as well as for informal learning.

Students’ assessment

Students’ assessment is achieved through a combination of written examinations (80% of the total score) along with small scale projects allocated to groups of students and presented during the semester (20%).
