Short Description:

Victimology examines the features of the victims of crime, their relationship with the perpetrator, the reasons and consequences of victimization. It also studies the real extent of the criminality and modes for its prevention.

The course will be comprised of three units-sections, as follows:

  • Elements of Victimology as a scientific criminological branch. Notion and theories
  • Presentation and analysis of the findings of local, national and transnational victim surveys
  • Methods and means of prevention of victimization, especially of vulnerable groups

Aims:

This course focuses on the study of the interaction between victim and offender, the findings of victim surveys regarding the qualitative and quantitative features of crime, the beliefs and attitudes of victims and the public on crime and its repression, the fear of crime and its consequences.

Learning Outcomes:

Students should be able to understand in depth the significance of the interaction between victim and offender. Also, the real extent and qualities of crime, beyond the official statistics.They will familiarisethemselves with methods of preventiing victimization.

Structure:

13 three-hour lectures

Assessment:

Written or oral exams after the end of the course.Another 10% for the preparation and presentation of papers on a voluntary basis
