Professor of Sociology of Education.

Previous work in Higher Education Institutions include the Department of Pre-school Education, University of Patras (Assistant Professor, 1998-2004) and the Department of Primary Education, University of Ioannina (P.T. lecturer, 1995-1997) in Greece, and the Department of Sociology, University of East London, in the U.K (Associate Lecturer, 1991-1993).

Research interests

My intellectual interests lie within social theory, the sociology of educational knowledge and practices, and sociological approaches to education policy. A main source of inspiration is the sociological theory of Basil Bernstein. I have carried out research focusing on the recontextualisation of knowledge in a variety of contexts and sites in formal and informal education, which provide me with the opportunity to explore the possibilities of the theory for understanding knowledge transformations and their implications for students and teachers. My research topics include: (i) analyses of educational practices, school textbooks and knowledge constructions aimed at teachers; (ii) explorations of changes in knowledge in crucial sub-fields of Educational Studies, such as mathematics education; and (iii) examination of knowledge appropriation within the wider cultural field, such as the use of mathematics in advertising, under globalisation. Some of this research has been pursued in collaboration with colleagues specialising in mathematics education and science education, and funded by bodies such as the U.K. Economic and Social Research Council and The British Academy. On-going studies with doctoral and post-doctoral students include: students’ choices and their educational careers in post-secondary and higher education; changes in higher education curricula in the context of European policies; and knowledge transformations in the field of educational administration in Greece as a response to global and European policies.
