Programme Profile and Academic Rationale

The new Undergraduate Programme in “Social Policy” is designed as a coherent, contemporary and scientifically grounded programme that examines social policy at all levels of governance and across its contemporary fields of application. A central feature of the programme is the connection between two interrelated dimensions: the institutional and regulatory dimension, which concerns the design and evaluation of policies, and the applied and organisational dimension, which concerns the implementation and management of social interventions.

Through this approach, graduates acquire a comprehensive understanding of social protection models and develop skills in policy analysis, evaluation and implementation, enabling them to respond to the needs of public administration, local government, international organisations and organisations in the social economy.

The programme’s fields of study include social insurance, social welfare and care, health protection, education and employment, housing, criminal policy, migration policy, gender equality, the social economy and the broader protection of vulnerable population groups. Its frame of reference extends from international organisations and the European Union to national and local policies, and from the macro-level of social protection systems to the micro-level of social service providers.

The programme is organised over eight (8) semesters and comprises 240 ECTS credits. It follows a clear progression from general background courses to subject-specific courses, specialisation courses and skills-development courses. Its structure supports the gradual deepening of knowledge: in the first semesters, the conceptual and institutional framework is established; subsequently, students’ training in quantitative and qualitative research approaches is strengthened; and in the advanced semesters, applied fields, specialisation options and connections with practice are developed.

The programme design is structured around thematic strands covering Background Courses; Social Policy and Institutions; Health Policy and Economics; Social Security, Employment and Social Entrepreneurship; Governance and Policies for the Protection of Vulnerable Groups; and Methodology and Skills for Social Research. These strands ensure internal coherence, interdisciplinarity and a clear programme identity.

A critical element of the programme is the balance between theoretical education and practical application. Laboratory and/or tutorial components are included where pedagogically necessary. The programme also includes a three-month Practical Training component (18 ECTS) in the final semester, which strengthens links with real-world learning environments and professional practice. In addition, the compulsory Undergraduate Thesis (12 ECTS) provides a pathway for deeper academic engagement and familiarises students with the research process and the specific field of knowledge in which the thesis topic is situated.
